A nurse will receive Covid vaccine first in Bangladesh, said Health Secretary Abdul Mannan on Saturday.

He came up with the information from a programme at Kidney Hospital in the morning.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will virtually inaugurate Covid vaccination programme on 27 January, he said.

The consignment of 20 lakh doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, gifted by India, arrived at Dhaka Airport by air cargo around 11:20am on Thursday.

Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Vikram Kumar Doraiswami handed over 20 lakh doses of the Covishield vaccine to Bangladesh in a programme at the state guest house Padma, hours after the jabs arrived in Dhaka.

The Indian envoy handed over the first box of the vaccine to Health Minister Zahid Maleque and Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.

The coronavirus vaccine is now kept at the store of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

Besides, Bangladesh is bringing 3 crore shots of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from India’s Serum Institute.

Bangladesh plans to start countrywide vaccination from 8 February after a week’s trial run.

Another 400-500 health workers will be vaccinated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, Mugda General Hospital, and Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital the next day.
