Maintaining a continued improvement in the situation, India reported less than 60,000 daily Covid-19 cases for the first time in 81 days with the addition of 58,419 new infections recorded in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry said today.

Daily recoveries from the disease, whose second wave caused devastation across India, continued to outnumber daily new cases for the 38th consecutive day, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

India’s total active Covid-19 caseload declined to 7,29,243 and total recoveries stand at 2,87,66,009 so far, according to the ministry data.

A total of 87,619 patients recovered during the last 24 hours, pushing the countrywide recovery rate up to 96.27 percent.

The weekly positivity rate remains below five percent — currently at 3.43 percent while the daily positivity rate is at 3.22 percent, less than five percent for 13 consecutive days.

The testing capacity has been substantially ramped up with the total tests pegged at 39.10 crore so far.

With the second wave of Covid-19 waning, authorities of many Indian states lifted the curbs on economic activities and public movement but the Indian Home Ministry yesterday advised caution and asked to ensure strict adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour and easing of restrictions only after proper assessment of the situation.

“Easing of restrictions in some states have led to resumption of crowding of people in markets etc. without adherence to the norms of Covid-appropriate behaviour. It is, therefore essential to ensure that complacency does not set in and there is no let-up in adhering to Covid-appropriate behaviour, while opening up activities,” Indian Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla wrote to all states and federally-ruled territories.
